So here is my advice to you- Don't think that, or it probably will happen to you.
I had just heard a story about someone getting their identity stolen and a bunch of money, and at the end of the story thought, "that will never happen to me.".........
Here is our story:
This morning, I got on the computer to check emails, and do my regular morning routine. When I went to my bank account there were some charges that I had no idea what they were. I couldn't imagine Erick had made them, but I didn't want to jump to conclusions before I asked Erick about them. That could be very embarrassing to get the bank on the phone and claim to have never spent the money to later find out your husband had!!! So I sent Erick a message asking him to look and see if he know what they were. He of course sent a message right back that they were not his! While I was waiting for the clock to strike 10am, the phone rang. It was a lady from QVC (where one of the purchases was from). She is calling to verify that I had really ordered the HOME STEREO SYSTEM!!! Okay first of all, I don't even own a couch what am I going to do with a home stereo system. So I explain that I had just seen the charges and that I had not made the purchase. She said she would cancel it. I asked where it was being sent to and she told me she could not give me any information about the purchase other than it was to be delivered in Massachusetts. When I got off the phone it was exactly 10:00, so I called the bank. After waiting for an hour, which come on, you are going to tell me that right at 10:00 "all operators are currently assisting other customers"? I don't think so! I guess what happened was I called as they were turning the phone system on and my call got "lost". I would probably still be on the phone, because I was petrified of loosing my place in line, but thankfully Erick who knew I was still waiting tried to call and got right through, so he sent me a message to hang up. Right after I hung up the bank called me. So Erick is on the phone at the school with the bank and I am now on the phone with the bank at home. She was calling to verify a purchase from Bed Bath & Beyond. I explained to her what we knew, what the lady at QVC had said and that Erick was on the phone with someone else at the same time. As I am talking to her a purchase came through for Forever 21, and iTunes. It was like living a nightmare. The charges wouldn't stop and the thought of someone having ALL my information tied to my debit card was really freaking me out. They kept asking me if I could stop in to a branch and get it all sorted out, but the fact that I am out of the country makes that a little difficult!
Long story shortened a little.. We now have to deal with paperwork long distance to get all the money back and change all the information on our account. I then spend the rest of the day on the phone with the Social Security Administration, the major credit reporting agencies and the bank. Hopefully we have it all under control now, but what a mess!

What a nightmare! At least you somehow can get the money back! That is so scary! I had someone in Mexico try to use our account, but somehow it looked fishy and the transaction was denied (thankfully), but we still had to get new account numbers. Sorry you guys have to go through the hassle. I hope they can track the address of where these items were to be shipped and charge this person.
That is so scary!!! It's good that everything got sorted out though.
OH LESLIE! That is terrible. I am so sorry to hear about this. It makes me sick to know people take advantage of other people like that. Good Luck with everything. If there is anything at all we can do, please let us know. :(
So sorry!! What a pain! I'm hoping you have it all worked out soon. I'm amazing that people actually feel OK about doing things like that. It seems most people with a conscience would feel too guilty to enjoy their purchases - too bad there are too many people out there that apparently don't feel a bit guilty about stealing.
Love the quote of the week idea.:} Cute layout - first time I've seen it.
WHAT A MESS!! I was frustrated by just reading the crazy story! I wish I could help you out. SORRY!
Yeah we have been there done that, and I know what a nightmare that is, and you feel so helpless and violated. I hope they can get it figured out!
Oh my Goodness! That is terrible. I once had my planner stolen and the thought that someone would use my cards before I had a chance to cancel them made me so sick to my stomach. It was the worst feeling. I hope you are able to get all of your money back. I'm glad that you caught it when you did or it could have been a whole lot worse.
Hi, you don't know me, but I know Zach and Allyson and my husband was just accepted a week ago to Ross for the upcoming MAY semester. So I'm kind of freaking out right now because we only have TWO MONTHS. Do you have any advice or tips on what to bring or what to leave home? Anybody at the school who was really helpful on getting your family over there? Somebody who answered all your questions? How long did it take to get approved for the federal loans and the visas? Sorry that I'm throwing everything at you, but I'm freaking out a little.
Oh by the way, so sorry about the money thing! I just now read the post. I figured if I'm going to ask for help, I should read your post. That's terrible. It's a terrible, terrible feeling. That happened to my husband's account once and you feel so violated. Also our bank tried to weasle out of reimbursing us even though they were required to.
Oh thanks so much for being willing to help me out and also about the vaccination info. I was a mess. My email is brittmarshall@hotmail.com
Some questions I have:
-Is it better to secure housing before you arrive or after? And if before, what are the good places that are nicer, new, and don't smell to funny? (I'm paranoid about choosing a place I haven't seen or smelled)
-We dont't have children yet, so our needs vary, but what are things you wish you would have brought?
-What are things you brought, but really didn't need & ended up being wasted space?
-I've read that there's not many dairy products on the island. Is that true and if so what DO they have?
-What about clothing stores? I understand it's not a bustling metropolis. Should I bring ALL my clothing for the next 2 years?
I think that's all for now. I'll try to think of more questions cause I know I'll have more. Thanks!
Wow Leslie! I am so sorry, that is really crazy! HOw did your bank say you can protect yourself? That really worries me, you know me:) Well, I sure miss you guys but love that I can look on here and get caught up!
